Hello blog readers,
I had the pleasure of attending a wonderful high school program recently, hosted by the schools performing arts department. Singing, acting, dancing, script reading… I was so proud of all the students who worked so hard. Their efforts paid off in an outstanding production. I was nearly brought to tears by some of the performances… which might support this quote by Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy: “Art is the activity by which a person, having experienced an emotion, intentionally transmits it to others.”
If the work of hard-working high school students had such an effect on me, I can only imagine the emotion I might experience if I witnessed a masterpiece by a skilled artist. Have you ever seen, in person, a true masterpiece? How do you know if you’ve seen one?
Webster‘s defines masterpiece as a “supreme intellectual or artistic achievement.” It’s also defined as “a work of outstanding artistry, skill, or workmanship” … “an artist’s or craftsman’s best piece of work.”
People who have witnessed an authentic masterpiece say the experience never leaves you. Philanthropist Paul Mellon once said, “There is no intellectual or emotional substitute for the authentic, the original, the unique masterpiece.”
Let me encourage you with a beautiful truth. You absolutely have seen a masterpiece in your lifetime. According to God’s word, it’s you.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Not only did He make you His masterpiece — He gave you purpose. Your life is important, and you have a specific work to do. That should make anyone smile. God can’t lie…. it’s impossible. He called you His masterpiece, so it has to be true. What a gift! It’s who you are… and He prepared a good work for you long ago.
Trying to figure out what your work is might feel overwhelming, but God gives us direction on how to do it: Delight yourself in Him.
(NIV) The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;
(NLT) The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
(NAS) The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way;
Delight yourself in the Lord. Be happy to spend time with Him, seek Him, get to know Him. If you need help doing that, pray for Him to be the desire of your heart. Pray asking Him to help you love Him more. As you live your life loving Him, and treasuring your relationship with Him, He will work all things for your good. He does that for all who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. My prayer for you is that you know the plans He has for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. In Jesus name, Amen.
Hello blog readers. Man oh man, nobody told me how challenging it would be to create *and maintain* a blog. I love God’s word, and this blog is a huge blessing to me. But it’s also very easy to neglect. Life, hobbies, excuses, and insecurities often get in the way.
During this morning’s prayer time, I tried to understand what’s getting in the way of my obedience. One of the things is ‘focus‘. For me, focus has to be fought for… or it fades. So, when it comes to my life, hobbies, excuses, and insecurities — I asked myself, “What do I want to be known for?” The answer is God’s child *first*. Any other hobbies, talents, & abilities are extra.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece, created to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Two other things getting in the way of my obedience are ‘image‘ and ‘success‘. Who doesn’t want to be successful? Of course, success is measured differently for every person… But, according to God’s word, chasing success isn’t the way to gain success:
Psalm 1:2-3 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
That scripture is like a prescription from the Doctor right now for me!
I’m learning there will always be something vying for my attention. The enemy’s goal is to take the focus off God. I’m thankful that God gives us a written guide. I’m praying to keep Ephesians 2:10 close to my heart, through meditation day & night. Focus.
My life is not about me. It’s not my own. I am God’s masterpiece, created to do good works which He prepared in advance for me to do. Amen.
Hello blog readers,
I want to share something with everyone on their Christian walk. I’m learning to understand the importance of giving God my time. In prayer, in giving to others, in confessing my sins, in study, in worship — my time with God is of great value. The truth is, I need Him more than He needs me! Everything I need is in Him. Wisdom, patience, forgiveness, love. And without Him, I’m pretty wretched. We all are.
One thing I’m learning is that He doesn’t allow me to be comfortable in sin. I’m finding out that the Lord has no problem convicting my heart. The other day, I saw a quote that read, “Admitting you have a problem is the first step in fixing the problem.”
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Makes sense that God would point out what areas need fixing. And frankly, I need Him to point it out! He wants us to live abundantly – not as slaves to our sin.
Psalm 107:14 He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains.
If you find yourself noticing plenty of areas within you that need fixing, don’t be discouraged. Know that God is working.
Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
